How Showhomes Can Inspire Your Own Home Design
Are you planning on Showhome shopping sometime soon? Get the most out of your experience and make an action plan for your dream home with these tips.
Apart from the front door, one of the first things you will see at a Showhome is a Building Consultant. They’re there to answer any questions you have and discuss ideas with. Your first extinct might be to avoid them, but they’re a great source of information, advice, ideas and guidance. This is your chance to throw all your big hairy questions at them. Take advantage, test their expertise and start developing your own knowledge of the build process.
You could ask them about the Showhome you’re in, how it might fit within your budget, which areas have been upgraded and which come as standard. Ask about the floor size, the section size that it’s on, and what special features it has. If you like the look of a specific fixture or element, feel free to ask exactly where it’s from.
The questions you ask, and the things you learn, can be of huge help later in the process and define the course of your build project.
Take Photos for Reference
Taking photos of the things you like (or even dislike) can come in handy.
If you’re visiting multiple Showhomes, your brain will be swimming with ideas by the end of the day. It’s handy to have photos to look back on when you start consolidating your wish-list. Things to take pictures of could be the interior décor, a specific material, or the shape of a roofline you particularly like. Think about how the cabinetry and furniture is positioned or the way each room flows from space to space. And, take note of the finer things like fixtures, framing, textures and joinery that you like.
If you’re new to the building industry, you may not know what the thing you like is even called (“I LOVE that pointy roof bit!”). If you’ve got a photo of it, it’ll help your builder interpret your vision easier and ensure you’re both on the same page.
Be Open to New Ideas
Whether you’ve got a solid idea of what you want from your home build or no idea at all, try and approach the Showhome visit with an open mind. Take it as an opportunity to challenge some of the initial ideas you’ve had and try on different styles and layouts.
“I would rather have a mind opened by wonder than one closed by belief.”
- Gerry Spence
For example, you may have wanted to build yourself a spacious two-storey abode, then find a single-storey Showhome with the perfect open-plan layout that ticks all your boxes. Or perhaps you were adamant you wanted a brick home with cedar features until you fell in love with a country-style weatherboard Showhome. And that’s what Showhome shopping is all about! Have some fun with it. It’s not every day you get to design your dream home, so give yourself the freedom to explore new ideas and options you might not have considered. Who knows what you’ll find?
Grab a copy of the floor-plan
Showhome shopping gives you get a real sense of what each space in the home could feel like and gives you a taste for how you might like to proportion out your home. It’s one thing to browse house plans in a book or drawn out on a piece of paper, but another to be able to gauge how those measurements will feel in real life. And if you’ve got a certain m2 limit to stick to, how you use each of those metres can make a huge difference in the outcome of your build.
Bathrooms are a great example of this. If you have a dream bathroom or ensuite in mind, and you find a Showhome bathroom that feels just right, ask for a copy of the floorplan. You can then refer to it when it comes time to design yours. Likewise, you could do the same if a space feels too pokey or small.
